Raccoon Revisted

I was hoping to incorporate some holiday food traditions my current foster kids have....I asked C what kind of foods he normally has for Thanksgiving. I guess he normally goes to his Aunties and she cooks the holiday meals. He said they normally have mashed potatoes, vegetables, salad, and (wait for it) Raccoon.

I am not a vegetarian. I grew up with a step father who hunted most of the protein we ate as children. I am no stranger to venison, wild poultry, and even squirrel...but raccoon has never found it's way to my plate. I asked my step father whether he has ever ate raccoon. He admits to "eliminating" a few that were getting into his garbage, but never consuming one. This man has been known to eat worms. This man believes road kill is "good eats". He lives a few miles from a pheasant farm. Once one got out at was apparently clipped by a passing car. It wasn't on the road on his way into town, but it was on his way home ten minutes later. He pulled his truck over, and had that pheasant for supper that night. I am not sure it was legal, but I am sure it was gross. So I think if he hasn't eaten a raccoon I should probably not feel guilty, for not offering to serve it....

C also known as Mr. Symptoms has asked about the raccoon again. He wants to know if we can have it for Christmas. I gently tell him that raccoons are out of season in this area. He says it's ok, he saw chitterlings at the grocery store last week, those would be fine instead! ME and my big mouth!!!!!!!!!
